Seoul Virus in Pet and Feeder Rats in The Netherlands

Abstract: Seoul virus (SEOV) is a zoonotic orthohantavirus carried by rats. In humans, SEOV can cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Recent human SEOV cases described in the USA, United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands were associated with contact with pet or feeder rats. The prevalence of SEOV in these types of rats is unknown. We collected 175 pet and feeder rats (Rattus norvegicus) from private owners, ratteries and commercial breeders/traders in the Netherlands. Lung tissue of the rats was tested using a … Show more

“…For the prevention and control of HV, special attention should be paid to the spillover of overseas HV between the host animals of the two countries and the variability of genotype caused by the overflow among species. Many studies have shown that the host types of HV are extremely diverse [ 14 , 25 , 26 , 27 ]. It is necessary to expand the detection range of host animal species and pay attention to the monitoring of the virus-carrying rate in various small mammals, rather than only in rodentia .…”

“…This clade is distinct from SEOV sequences recovered from wild rodents in Europe and the Americas, suggesting a single introduction and international expansion of this lineage into domesticated rat populations, rather than separate local introductions from wild rats. A Seoul Virus Associated with Pet Rats, Scotland recent study from the Netherlands revealed evidence of international trading of rats by breeding farms and private persons, a practice that might promote cross-border dispersal of this lineage (12). The risk for SEOV transmission from domesticated rats might be greater than that posed by wild rodents.…”
