Sentinel surveillance of influenza in Burkina Faso: identification of circulating strains during 2010–2012

Abstract: BackgroundAlthough influenza surveillance has recently been improved in some sub-Saharan African countries, no information is yet available from Burkina Faso.ObjectivesOur study was the first to determine the prevalence of influenza viruses circulating in Burkina Faso through a sentinel surveillance system.MethodsWe conducted sentinel surveillance with oropharyngeal (OP) swabs collected from outpatients (1 month to 83 years) from six sites in Bobo-Dioulasso and Ouagadougou, among patients meeting the WHO/CDC c… Show more

“…The burden of seasonal influenza in children under 5 years of age and those from 5 to 14 years appears far greater than in the elderly [11][12][13][14][15][16]. This corroborates findings elsewhere that younger children experience a high influenza attack rate and a higher rate of influenza-related complications [46].…”

“…In Togo and Niger, the highest influenza positive percentage was observed in 5 -14 years old with respectively (30%) among ILI in Togo [12] and 25% among ILI patients and 10% among severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) patients in Niger [13]. In Burkina Faso, of the 881 patients with ILI enrolled and sampled in the sentinel surveillance system, 58 (6.6%) tested positive for influenza viruses [14]. In contrast to the findings in Togo and Niger, the most affected were patients within 0 -5 years (41.4%), the 6 -14 years old were the second (22.4%) [14].…”

“…Influenza virus survival and transmissibility might be influenced by multiple factors. Previous studies have found the seasonality of influenza viruses was associated with rainy season [612], or with low humidity levels [1315]. Therefore, additional years of surveillance data with more information on climatic factors might be helpful to better understand the seasonality of influenza in Chongqing.…”

“…In Burkina Faso, an influenza sentinel surveillance for outpatients with influenza‐like illness (ILI) was established at the National Influenza Reference Laboratory in 2010, in the aftermath of the A(H1N1) pandemic. In a preliminary report covering 2010‐2012, 6.6% of ILI cases in the general population were influenza positive . The few studies investigating the seasonal circulation of influenza in Burkina Faso were not conclusive on seasonal patterns, hindering proper recommendations for a national policy for the management and prevention of influenza‐related illnesses, and no seasonal vaccination is currently performed in Burkina Faso.…”
