Sentinel-1 and Ground-Based Sensors for Continuous Monitoring of the Corvara Landslide (South Tyrol, Italy)

Abstract: The Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission provides synthetic aperture radar (SAR) acquisitions over large areas with high temporal and spatial resolution. This new generation of satellites providing open-data products has enhanced the capabilities for continuously studying Earth surface changes. Over the past two decades, several studies have demonstrated the potential of differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry (DInSAR) for detecting and quantifying land surface deformation. DInSAR limitations and challen… Show more

“…This Alpine region is characterized by the presence of several active landslides ranging between flank-scale Deep Seated Gravitational Slope Deformations (DSGSD) to rockfalls and rockslides [60][61][62][63][64][65][66]. One of the first applications of InSAR to assess the state of activity of a rockslide comes from this province (Ruinon landslide, Santa Caterina Valfurva municipality [67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79]).…”

“…In Trentino-Alto Adige, the Corvara complex landslide (Bolzano Province) has been widely studied by means of InSAR. Corner reflectors, specifically designed for the installation in a high mountain environment, were deployed on the landslide to increase the number and quality of measurement points [76][77][78][79]. A unique application of satellite interferometry comes from the Adige River Valley (Lavini di Marco site, Trento Province [80]), where InSAR was used to study slope buckling.…”

“…This landslide frequently causes damages to the national road SS 244, the ski infrastructures, and the nearby golf course. The Corvara landslide has been monitored for several decades by different systems [31]- [33]. Eighteen Sentinel-1A/B images in descending orbit and interferometric wide swath mode covering from July 22 to November 1 in 2017 at the same acquisition time (5:18 A.M. UTC) were collected over the Corvara landslide.…”

“…The new monitoring approach is an important complement to the traditional geodetic surveying methods [12]. D-InSAR is widely applied to detect and monitor earthquake deformation [13], glacial shift [14], volcanic activity [15], and landslides [16], as well as man-made activities such as mining subsidence [17] and urban settlement caused by groundwater overdraft [18]. However, the unavoidable influences of the temporal and spatial decorrelation and atmospheric delay have brought restrictions on its application, especially on mining areas vulnerable to decorrelation.…”
