Sensory Processing Sensitivity

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to examine the factor structure of a Norwegian version of the Highly Sensitive Person Scale (HSPS) and to investigate how sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) is related to personality traits of neuroticism, extraversion, and openness and to subjective health complaints (SHC) in a sample of 167 undergraduate psychology students. The results showed that the variance in a shortened version of the HSPS was best described by three separate factors: ease of excitation (EOE), aesthet… Show more

“…Regaring the second factor of the structure found in this study, items 7, 9 and 25 have been part of the Low Sensory Threshold (LST) factor in three previous reported versions,79 but not item 1, which has been excluded in all the reviewed reports for this investigation. Despite this, the second factor obtained by the factorial analysis included it, and for this version, it was decided to keep the name given by the other studies.…”

“…Grimen & Diseth,9 also reported this three factors structure with 13 items in the Norwegian population. While in Turkish population10 a four-factor structure was found with the original 27 items test, three of these dimensions were renamed as: External Stimulus Sensitivity (ESS), Damage Avoidance (DA) and, Sensitivity to Overstimulation (SO).…”

“…Since the negative impact of a VHFS/US sound exposure on human health is only superficially investigated and understood at the moment, the application of the precautionary principle [24] is warranted, making it necessary to regulate the use of VHFS/US sound in public places (including workplaces) more strictly to minimise potential effects on sufferers. This precaution would especially protect people that are sensitive to VHFS/US sound exposures like those with the ability to hear VHFS/US sound [21] (children being especially relevant with this respect) as well as those Highly Sensitive People (HSP) who have a lower threshold for the detection of sensory signals and have a different processing of them [25][26][27][28].…”

“…This variance may be due to their specific cognitive style determined by, or at least correlated with factors related to, personality (see [18,19]). Sensory processing sensitivity is one such personality trait that involves being more or less responsive, reactive or receptive, to some environmental stimuli (for a review see e.g., [20,21]): people with high sensory processing sensitivity process information more strongly and deeply, and perceptively retain this information more easily than others with low sensory processing sensitivity. Thus, they have a higher imagery capacity for particular word items compared to people with low sensory processing sensitivity.…”
