Background: The study of children with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP) has traditionally focused on motor aspects. The extent to which sensory processing disorders can affect their functional performance and quality of life (QoL) is uncertain. This study aimed to explore the differences in sensory processing between UCP and typical development (TD) children and to analyze the relationship of sensory processing with functional performance and QoL. Methods: Fifty-three children aged from 6 to 15 years (TD = 24; UCP = 26) were recruited. The Child Sensory Profile 2, Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory—Computer Adaptive Test and Kidscreen were used to evaluate sensory processing, functional performance and QoL. Results: UCP children showed sensory processing difficulties (avoidance: p = 0.02; registration: p = 0.00; body position: p = 0.00; oral: p = 0.02; social-emotional: p = 0.01), and scored lower in functional performance (daily activities: p = 0.00; mobility: p = 0.00; social/cognitive: p = 0.04) and in physical well-being (p = 0.00). The highest correlations in UCP group were found between proprioceptive processing and daily activities and mobility (r = −0.39); auditory, visual and tactile information and school environment (r = −0.63; r = −0.51; r = −0.46); behavioral and social-emotional responses and psychological well-being (r = −0.64; r = −0.49). Conclusions: UCP children have greater difficulty in sensory processing than TD children. Difficulties in proprioceptive processing contribute to poorer functional performance. Auditory, visual and tactile processing is associated with participation in the school environment and behavioral and social-emotional responses related to sensory processing are associated with the psychological well-being.

У статті описано та проаналізовано методику Сенсомоторний батьківський опитувальник (оригінальна назва – Sensorimotor History Questionnaire for Preschoolers). Розглядається проблема порушень обробки та інтеграції сенсорної інформації у нормотипових дітей та дітей з розладами аутистичного спектра. Висвітлено сучасні дослідження сенсорних особливостей та порушень у дітей, звернено увагу на необхідність досліджень особливості сенсорної сфери та її порушень у нормотипових дітей та дітей з РАС (розлади аутистичного спектра, аутизм) на вітчизняній вибірці. Описано результати адаптації та апробації методики Сенсомоторний батьківський опитувальник на вибірці українських дітей. Методика була переведена на українську мову з мови оригіналу (англійська) із залученням професійного перекладача. Адаптований варіант пройшов асиметричний переклад, який дозволив зберегти смислове навантаження тверджень і дотримання вимог чіткості та однозначності формулювань. Для підрахунку балів використовувалася програмне забезпечення Excel 2016, для перевірки психометричних характеристик методики статистична програма IBM SPSS Statistics 23. Психометричні характеристики методики показали високий та достатній рівень. Була проведена стандартизація процедури та інтерпретації результатів дослідження, для цього було обчислено частотний розподіл за загальним показником та додатково – за віковими группами, для визначення меж вираженості порушень сенсорної сфери у дітей і підлітків. За результатами частотного розподілу було визначено загальний розподіл балів, який дає можливість визначати наявність та вираженість порушень обробки та інтеграції сенсорної інформації у дітей.

Background: The Evaluation in Ayres Sensory Integration V R (EASI) is a performance-based assessment tool, aiming to assess sensory perception, sensory reactivity, postural/ocular/bilateral integration, and praxis in children aged 3-12 years. These types of tests are currently not available in Swedish. A structured, multistep process of translation is crucial for maintaining equivalence between the source and target version of a test. Objective: Develop a culturally adapted Swedish research version of the EASI for use in the forthcoming international normative data collection. Method: The translation process followed the first four stages in recommended guidelines for cross-cultural adaptation. Each subtest was translated by two occupational therapists and merged into one Swedish version. That version was reviewed by clinical paediatric occupational therapists in focus groups. The meetings were recorded, transcribed and a content analysis was conducted. One subtest was then subjected to a back-translation process. Result: Some discrepancies regarding semantic equivalence were found and adapted through all stages. No discrepancies regarding idiomatic or conceptual equivalence were found. Revisions due to the translation process have been incorporated into the final research version of the EASI. Conclusion: A first, culturally adapted research version of the EASI is ready for the Swedish normative data collection.
