Sensory nerve supply of the distal radio-ulnar joint with regard to wrist denervation

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the precise departure points of the articular branches innervating the distal radio-ulnar joint from the anterior and posterior interosseous nerves. The study sample consisted of 116 upper limbs from adult human cadavers. The articular branches were prepared under the dissection microscope to take measurements using the radial styloid process as point of reference. The articular branch departed from the anterior interosseous nerve at a mean distance of 2.9 cm proxim… Show more

“…Consequently, the role of physical therapy to evaluate and treat posture-related extremity pain is critical and physicians that treat pain should not hesitate to refer patients with pain to physical and/or occupational therapy. Additionally, joint denervation is one treatment option in the algorithm for the management of arthritic pain [14][15][16][17][18][19].…”

“…It is unclear whether this procedure improves outcomes because of denervation of the radiocarpal joint and helps resolve other pathology, or PIN neurectomy denervates the DRUJ. [26][27][28] It is also possible the PIN neurectomy is a surrogate for other technical factors that are unable to be captured in the data available.…”
