Sensory Mechanism and Selective Advantage for Diel Vertical Migration in Juvenile Sockeye Salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka

Abstract: Diel vertical migrations are commonly undertaken by juvenile sockeye salmon within pelagic lake nursery environments. Data from hydroacoustic surveys in British Columbia lakes are used to compare predictions from sensory mechanism and selective advantage theories for diel vertical migration with the performance of the animals under field conditions. The observations suggest that light and temperature controlled juvenile sockeye day and night depth positions respectively. A multifactor hypothesis, which interpr… Show more

“…Eklöv & Persson (1995) have experimentally shown that, in the absence of reasonable refuges, juvenile perch have a low capacity to avoid predation, being quickly eliminated from the pelagic zone. Consequently, the dwelling of BPF in a cold hypolimnion could be an important mechanism of predator avoidance (Levy, 1990). Moreover, their shoaling behaviour could also serve to reduce predation (for review see e.g., Moyle & Cech, 2003).…”

“…La stratification du milieu, avec la présence d'une halocline / thermocline, influence les déplacements verticaux des poissons dans la colonne d'eau (LEVY, 1990 ;APPENZELLER et LEGGETT, 1995). Ces travaux portent sur des espèces marines et montrent que les mouvements verticaux peuvent être bloqués dans une couche d'eau.…”

“…Temperature and light are other physical factors likely to impact on the distribution offish (Jobling 1981;Coutant 1987;Levy 1990). Trout generally avoid temperatures > 21 °C (Spigarelli & Thommes 1979;Stables & Thomas 1992) and a New Zealand study on rainbow trout in two North Island lakes found that this temperature preference was the main variable determining the depth distribution of trout when oxygen was not limiting (Rowe & Chisnall 1995).…”
