We identified, summarized, and appraised the certainty of evidence for 12 studies investigating the use of music therapy for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The studies were summarized in terms of (a) participant characteristics, (b) dependent variables, (c) procedures, (d) results, and (e) certainty of evidence. A total of 147 participants aged 3 to 38 years were included in the 12 studies. Dependent variables included: (a) decreasing undesirable behavior, (b) promoting social interaction, (c) improving independent functioning, (d) enhancing understanding of emotions, and (e) increasing communication. Music therapy included the use of specific songs with lyrics related to target skills as well as musical improvisation. Outcomes were positive for 58 % of the studies and mixed for 42 % of the studies. Certainty of evidence was rated as conclusive for 58 % of the studies. The existing literature suggests that music therapy is a promising practice for individuals with ASD, but additional research is warranted to further establish its generality and the mechanisms responsible for behavior change.

The new DSM-5 criteria include the alterations of sensory perception as a new diagnostic criterion to consider in the ASD population. Considering the inclusion of this new approach, the purpose of this study is to compare the features of sensory processing among a group of children (from 5 to 8 years old) with and without ASD. In addition to this, in the case of the ASD group, possible relationships between the sensory processing and the severity of symptoms, assessed by the GARS-2, are analyzed. To do this, the parents of 84 children (41 with ASD diagnosis and 43 with typical development), reported their perception about their children's sensory processing. The results show significant differences between both groups in all subscales assessing sensory processing. Besides this, in the case of the ASD group, sensory processing characteristics are significantly related to the severity of autistic symptoms. These results show that children with ASD have a different sensory processing to children without ASD. The evaluation of the sensory profile of this particular population should be a prerequisite, since it would allow a better understanding of the disorder and it would also provide the possibility to implement therapeutic measures tailored to the particular needs of each individual.

Pivotal Response Treatment for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Systematic Review

Intervention studies evaluating pivotal response treatment (PRT) were systematically identified and analyzed. Forty-three studies were summarized in terms of (a) participant characteristics, (b) dependent variables, (c) intervention procedures, (d) intervention outcomes, and (e) certainty of evidence. The majority of the reviewed studies (56.4 %) had serious methodological limitations. However, the reviewed studies that provided conclusive or preponderant evidence (43.6 %) indicated that PRT results in increases in self-initiations and collateral improvements in communication and language, play skills, affect and reductions in maladaptive behavior for a number of children. Furthermore, the reviewed studies suggested that the majority of caregivers and staff members were able to implement PRT techniques, but evidence for collateral improvements in caregivers' and staff members' behaviors remains sparse. Implications for future research are discussed.
