Sensory disturbance along the inferior alveolar nerve as a first clinical sign of multiple florid cemento-osseous dysplasia of the mandible—A case report

Abstract: HighlightsFlorid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) is a rare, benign fibro-osseous tumour. We describe the case of a 39-year-old woman with FCOD and sensory paraesthesia.Biopsy was necessary for diagnosis to exclude malignancy and relieve the symptoms. We suggest that the paraesthesia resulted from nerve irritation caused by the FCOD.To our knowledge, this is the first report of paraesthesia combined with FCOD.

“…Nas análises histopatológicas a DCOF se assemelha bastantes às demais displasias ósseas, sendo o exame radiográfico o indicador mais preciso da hipótese diagnóstica de DCOF 17 . Essa displasia apresenta aspectos de diagnóstico semelhante a lesões como a doença óssea de Paget, fibroma cemento-ósseo, osteomelite crônica esclerosante difusa (OCED) e a displasia fibrosa 8,18 .…”

“…The reduced sensitivity in the terminal branches of the mandibular nerve is unusual in connection with an FD in the bone surrounding the nerve. Rather, this finding should be regarded as a sign of malignant neoplasm if no local findings can adequately explain other causes of this symptom (98)(99)(100)(101)(102).…”

“…COD is usually asymptomatic in the early stages and may be misdiagnosed as periapical periodontitis and treated with root canal therapy [ 3 , 4 ]. However, such treatment is not effective due to the presence of sclerotic bone around the tooth root [ 5 ]. COD can cause tooth pain, tooth looseness, poor healing after tooth extraction, and osteomyelitis [ 6 ]. COD generally leads to tooth loss, osteomyelitis, and osteonecrosis, affecting oral function and facial appearance and affecting whether dental implantation can be carried out due to the presence of sclerotic bone [ 7 ].…”
