Sensors based on new oxide electrolyte and oxygen reference materials for on-line measurements in steel melts

Abstract: Oxygen sensors are helpful tools to control and monitor continuous operations in steelmaking processes, e.g. in ladle refining and in the tundish of a continuous casting system. Up to the present no suitable oxygen probes for on-line measurements have been developed. In search of new sensors much work has been done to investigate and discuss possible error sources which impede the use of the conventional one-reading probes for continuous measurements. In the present study modified plug-type sensors and new com… Show more

“…17) It is well known the oxygen sensors containing zirconia based solid electrolyte are utilized extensively throughout the steelmaking process [18][19][20][21][22] and several investigators have also explored the use of zirconia probes to measure the activity of FeO x within the slag phase. [23][24][25][26][27][28] In these applications, the cells are operated in an equilibrium mode and the open circuit voltage (OCV) is measured.…”

“…If the reference potential is close to the potential at the sensing electrode, the cell voltage will be small and thus tend to be more stable than a large voltage. For example, the oxygen partial pressure established by a Pd þ PdO reference electrode [112,113] or other transition metals with oxides (simple or mixed) [114,115] are suitable for use at the high temperatures and low oxygen partial pressures in molten steel.…”

“…Steels with very low oxygen content can establish an oxygen partial pressure that is low enough for significant electronic conductivity to occur in zirconia. Significant electronic conductivity in the electrolyte can lead to an erroneous sensor output [103]. One area of improving the performance of electrochemical probes with respect to applying them in on-line measurements in metallurgy is the substitution of zirconia -based solid electrolyte by an alternative ceramic material, which remains a pure oxygen ion conductor to lower oxygen pressure.…”
