Sensorless Model Predictive Control of Single-Phase Inverter for UPS Applications via Accurate Load Current Estimation

Abstract: Single-phase inverters with an output LC filter, can generate low distortion output voltages, which are suitable for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. The UPS system provides emergency power in the case of utility power failure, requiring high reliability and clean power. The sensorless control method is actually a soft-sensing technique, that reduces system cost, measurement-related losses, and, especially important for UPS systems, enhances the system reliability. This paper proposes a load current… Show more

“…The system in Figure 1 allows decoupling the load with respect to the distorted grid source, with the load frequency and amplitude determined by the load-side inverter control algorithm; the literature shows several ways to control them, such as those in [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ]. Therefore, this study did not focus on load inverter control but only on the grid-side converter, which must deal with a distorted source (as the one presented in microgrids and weak grid systems), delivering, despite the unpredictable behavior of the grid, a controlled DC voltage to feed the load-side inverter with the desired DC link voltage.…”

“…The abc current references are imposed by the active and reactive power references ( 13) and ( 16), which means a current in phase with a supply voltage (active power) and π/2 radians (reactive power) phase-shifted with respect to the supply voltage. Assuming the voltage in (17), the current references have the following form:…”

“…The FBQ modulation scheme is discrete and has characteristics similar to the Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC); it requires low system sampling times for high performance, generating a sparse harmonic spectrum and variable switching frequency [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ].…”

“…By estimating the values in such a way, a better control quality is achievable. A state observer scheme is proposed in [14] for uninterruptible power supply applications and it is compared to classical approaches like with Kalman filters. The study presented in [15] shows an approach to deal with ocean environment disturbances by designing a nonlinear disturbance observer for unmanned surface vehicles to obtain safe and effective motion control performance.…”
