Sensorless flux-weakening control of permanent magnet brushless machines using third-harmonic back-EMF

Abstract: Abstract-The sensorless control of brushless machines by detecting the third harmonic back electromotive force is a relatively simple and potentially low-cost technique. However, its application has been reported only for brushless dc motors operating under normal commutation. In this paper, the utility of the method for the sensorless control of both brushless dc and ac motors, including operation in the flux-weakening mode, is demonstrated.Index Terms-Back electromotive force (EMF), brushless drives, permane… Show more

“…Several sensorless control technologies based on third harmonic back-EMF have been proposed recently [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. Shen in [5,6] presented the application for flux-weakening and ultrahigh speed sensorless control.…”

“…So the third harmonic based sensorless control is proposed for high speed operation. It should be pointed out that the third harmonic back-EMF has been used in sensorless control by detecting the zero crossing with a voltage comparator [4], [5]. Or by integrating the EMF and using a phaselocked loop (PLL) to keep the integration result being zero [3].Some preliminary results of this technique were reported in early paper.…”
