Sensorless Control of SMA-based Actuators Using Neural Networks

Abstract: The ability of shape memory alloys (SMA) to respond to an external stimulus by modifying their dimensions can be used to generate motion or force in electromechanical devices and micro-machines. It has been often demonstrated that SMA-based devices are serious alternatives to conventional micrometric actuators. We have previously demonstrated that, using a high-quality position sensor, such as a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT), to provide the position feedback, accuracies about 3 μm in position… Show more

“…All these approaches require more space, power and weight budget. Sensor-less control technique of SMA employs a current transducer or a burden resistor to calculate the SMA resistance and estimate its displacement 19,20 . This technique suffers from high noise, hysteresis, power drain, inaccuracy, lack of data during cooling phase and computationally intensive artificial intelligence based methods 20 .…”

“…The literature [12] has reported on differential type SMA actuators that were operated at a very low frequency but were not involving self-sensing. SSA techniques [2,6,[13][14][15][16] have been adopted but come with certain limitations. The self-sensing techniques mainly have two approaches: mapping and modelling of SMA material properties.…”

“…Other experimental studies include [15][16][17][18] which are concerned about self-sensing for a single wire at a low frequency using the polyfit method. In [19] the position information is fedback provided by neural network (NN). For this task, NN has to be trained off-line to implement resistance -position relationship for a series of open loop tests.…”
