Sensorial Property Evaluation of Scoured Silk Fabrics Using Quad Analysis

Abstract: The importance and usefulness of a subjective evaluation of the sensorial properties of scoured silk fabrics is discussed. Silk fabric was treated with 12 different scouring rates and the scoured fabrics were used as specimens. Seven trained subjects, using paired comparisons, evaluated seven subjective sensorial properties. A quad experimental design was adopted for a more effective and reliable evaluation. Objective sensorial properties were assessed by using the Kawabata Evaluation System (KES), and objecti… Show more

“…Previously the QA method had been applied to visual and tactile properties of fabrics [10,16], but not to detection of odor. A benefit of the QA test method is that it reduces the number of pairs required for assessment compared to the traditional paired-comparison test [10].…”

“…Many of these factors do not constrain sensory evaluation of other fabric properties (e.g. tactile) [16]. Unfortunately, this adaptation to the design precluded every assessor being exposed to every pair.…”

“…Quality Control of Textiles. Sensory evaluation had been applied in the study of the quality of fabrics and textiles (Winakor et al 1980;Chollakup et al 2004;Kim et al 2005;Pense-Lheritier et al 2006;Strazdiene et al 2006). Likewise, comfort and other physiological effects of clothing or apparel/fabrics (Stuart et al 1989, Sweeney and Branson 1990, Barker 2002, Cardello et al 2003, Okabe and Kurokawa 2004 and effects of the design (Sohn 2003) had been measured using sensory analysis.…”

“…A larger drape coefficient indicates a stiffer silhouette, while a smaller value means a drapery silhouette (Kenkare & May-Plumlee, 2005). Subjective measurements of drapability involve evaluators grade or ranking the tactile sensation felt in their hands, or comparing pairs of test items (Kim et al, 2005;Lee & Lim, 2014). However, objective evaluations of fabric drape characteristics can vary even with the same sample in repeated experiments, as they may not always produce the exact same shape, affecting the drape coefficient (Jeong, 1998).…”
