Sensitivity of Monthly Heart Rate and Psychometric Measures for Monitoring Physical Performance in Highly Trained Young Handball Players

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to examine whether monthly resting heart rate (HR), HR variability (HRV) and psychometric measures can be used to monitor changes in physical performance in highly-trained adolescent handball players. Data were collected in 37 adolescent players (training 10±2.1 h.wk(-1)) on 11 occasions from September to May during the in-season period, and included an estimation of training status (resting HR and HRV, the profile of mood state (POMS) questionnaire), and 3 physical performance… Show more

“…Indeed data derived from elite triathletes and adolescent Handball players suggests the use of a single data point could be misleading for practitioners due to the high day-to-day variation in these indices. 35,36 In elite triathletes when data were averaged over a week or using a 7-day rolling average significant large correlations were found with 10-km running performance compared to a single assessment point where negligible relationships were seen. 37 .…”

“…Additionally, changes in monthly HRV measurements were not sensitive to changes in performance indices in young Handball players. 36 Future research is needed to establish whether sensitivity of HR indices are seen over longer training periods in elite soccer players.…”

“…A similar observation in young handball players has also been reported when single monthly assessments were found to have less than 20% sensitivity to training status. 44 Future work is required to observe whether more frequent measures of HRV improve sensitivity to training load. Furthermore, future research is needed to establish how HRV responds to more extended and sustained periods of training and match load in elite soccer players.…”

“…13 A plethora of ASRM currently exist including the POMS, 14,15 DALDA, 16 TQR, 17 and REST-Q 18,19 which have been extensively documented in the literature. However, many of these are often extensive and time-consuming to complete preventing their use on a daily basis with large numbers of team athletes.…”
