Sensitivity of LEKID for space applications between 80 GHz and 600 GHz

Abstract: We report the design, fabrication, and testing of lumped element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKID) showing performance in line with the requirements of the next generation space telescopes operating in the spectral range from 80 GHz to 600 GHz. This range is of particular interest for cosmic microwave background studies. For this purpose we designed and fabricated 100 pixel arrays covering five distinct bands. These wafers were measured via multiplexing, in which a full array is read out using a single pair… Show more

“…A standard protocol to quantify the efficiency of a photon detector is to evaluate its noise equivalent power 10,25,31,32 (NEP) which corresponds to the signal power producing a signal-to-noise ratio of one in a one Hertz output bandwidth. NEP is defined in this case as:…”

“…Its time constant is fixed by the recombination time of the quasi-particles (a few tens of µs). This represents a major advantage with respect to the other detectors, which are a factor 10 slower (e.g., thermal bolometers and transition-edge sensor, TES, Catalano et al 2020).…”

“…The case of ground-based experiments has an additional requirement: the atmospheric fluctuations have to be addressed. For this purpose, FTSs have to be coupled with fast detectors, and kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) are the fastest available in large format arrays at mm-wavelength [4,5].…”
