Sensitivity of Podosphaera xanthii populations to anti-powdery-mildew fungicides in Spain

Abstract: Results suggest that thiophanate-methyl has become completely ineffective for controlling cucurbit powdery mildew in Spain. By contrast, bupirimate and quinoxyfen remain as very effective tools for cucurbit powdery mildew management. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…On the contrary, spore germination lower than 15% was observed in inoculated leaves treated with the fungicide as positive control, as expected. In fact, this chemical is a well‐known powdery mildew fungicide that prevents powdery mildew sporulation and suppresses new subsequent fungal infections . Most of the metabolites tested significantly reduced powdery mildew spore germination (Table ), with large differences between the effects of the different compounds.…”

“…In fact, this chemical is a well-known powdery mildew fungicide that prevents powdery mildew sporulation and suppresses new subsequent fungal infections. 27 Most of the metabolites tested significantly reduced powdery mildew spore germination (Table 2), with large differences between the effects of the different compounds. Metabolites 1, 2 and 3 were effective in reducing spore germination, with an effect that was dose dependent ( Table 2).…”

“…However, mutations in SQR subunits have conferred SDHI resistance in 14 fungal species thus far 24 , highlighting the need for new antifungal agents with diverse mechanisms of action. Although F. graminearum remains susceptible to chemical SDHIs for the time being, mutations that reduce susceptibility have been identified in a number of pathogens including B. cinerea 32 , 33 , Podosphaera xanthii 34 , 35 , Alternaria spp. 36 , 37 and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum 38 .…”
