Sensitivity of Diagnostic Tests for Dry Eye in Patients with Blepharospasm

Abstract: The aim of the study was to evaluate diagnostic tests for keratoconjunctivitis sicca (Schirmer test, tear break-up time (TBUT) test, and corneal staining with fluorescein and lissamine green dye) in patients with blepharospasm. This prospective study included 60 female patients older than 40 with blepharospasm, divided into two groups according to clinical symptoms. For fluorescein test, the surface under the ROC curve was 1.0 with standard error (SE) 0 and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 0.940-1.0; for Schir… Show more

“…Instillation of fluorescein disturbs tear film equilibrium, resulting in increased evaporation and tear film destabilization ( 6 ). It is usually performed by using standard fluorescein strips or reduced volume of fluorescein solution in order to improve its reproducibility ( 7 , 8 ). In normal eyes, TBUT values range from 3 seconds (s) to 132 s, with an average of 27 s ( 9 ).…”

“…13 The Schirmer test is a method for assessing tear production that is relatively simple and objective with a sensitivity of 83% and a specificity of 57%. [15][16][17] The Schirmer I test can be used to measure basal tear production and lacrimation reflex and does not require anesthesia in the examination procedure. 15 Tears consist of 3 layers, namely oil, water, and mucus.…”

“…Blepharospasm is a type of focal dystonia characterized by involuntary tonic contractions of the orbicular muscle 1 . These contractions lead to uncontrollable closure of the eyelids, making it difficult for patients to open their eyes spontaneously.…”
