Sensitivity of cotton cultivars to soil compaction

Abstract: Cotton is one of the most sensitive crops to soil compaction, but there may be genetic variability for this trait. The objective of this study was to evaluate cotton cultivars sensitivity to soil compaction. Soil columns were built with three pvc rings with internal diameter of 10 cm and filled with an alfisol. “…O moderado grau de compactação do solo em camadas superficiais (2,09 MPa), identificado nos períodos iniciais de desenvolvimento da cultura, foi benéfico para a emergência de plântulas, devido ao maior contato das sementes com as partículas do solo, que permite maior absorção de água para a germinação e melhor ancoragem das raízes, facilitando o crescimento da planta (Alameda e Villar, 2009).
