Sensitivity of Compressed Composite Channel Columns to Eccentric Loading

Abstract: This study investigated short thin-walled channel columns made of carbon/epoxy laminate. Columns with two multi-ply composite layups [0/45/−45/90]s and [90/−45/45/0]s were tested, with each layup having eight plies symmetric to the midplane. The columns were subjected to compressive loads, including an eccentric compressive load applied relative to the center of gravity of their cross-section. Simple support boundary conditions were applied to the ends of the columns. The scope of the study included analyzing … Show more

“…This approach enabled accurate observation of the deformation and stress states during the working of the compressed thin-walled Z-columns. The finite element size of the discrete model mesh was chosen after preliminary FEM analyses [ 65 , 66 ]. In addition, it should be added that there is the X-FEM (mesh-independent) method [ 67 , 68 , 69 , 70 ] in which the size of the finite element is not affected by the computational results.…”

“…So that, post-buckling strength can be increased by employing CFRP instead of GFRP. 38,51 In addition, changing the material inclusions can reinforce the laminated structures against crippling. Özbek 37 adds silica nanoparticles into Kevlar epoxy fiber reinforced material and encounters a significant enhancement at the buckling and postbuckling performance of the samples.…”
