Sensitivity of 523 Blood Culture Isolates to 33 Antibiotics

Abstract: 523 blood culture isolates collected during 18 months (July 1980-December 1981) were analysed by the agar dilution method for sensitivity to 33 antibiotics. Breakpoints corresponding to the SIR system were used but for N-formimidoyl-thienamycin (N-f-thienamycin), azthreonam and fosfomycin serial dilutions were made. Aminoglycosides (netilmicin, gentamicin, amikacin and tobramycin) inhibited from 90 to 86% of the strains. This was comparable to the percentage inhibited by some cephalosporins (cefotaxime, cefope… Show more

“…The microbiologic flora in stump infections includes mostly Staphylococcus aureus and various gramnegative enterobacteria. These are usually sensitive to cefotaxime (2), which also penetrates bone tissue (8) and produces an active metabolite (desacetylcefotaxime) with possible synergistic effect (5). Therefore, we chose to study this drug as a short-term prophylactic.…”

“…Aztreonam is a monobactam [1] with antibacterial activity predominantly against aerobic gram-negative organisms [2][3][4][5], The mode of action is bactericidal and has been found similar to the cephalo sporins with high affinity for PBP 3 and thereby affecting the septation of the bac teria [6]. The present study compared the in vitro activity of aztreonam against ampicillin, mecillinam, azlocillin, piperacil lin, cefradine, cefuroxime, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime and gentamicin against 383 bacteria recently isolated from clinical samples, and the relationship be tween MIC for different species is evalu ated.…”
