Sensitivity-Enhanced SPR Sensor Based on Graphene and Subwavelength Silver Gratings

Abstract: A novel surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor with graphene and subwavelength gratings is proposed to improve the sensing performance. A series of numerical analyses were performed to investigate the effect of structural parameters on the sensing performance, such as minimum reflectance at resonance (MRR), full width at half maximum (FWHM), and resonance angle. The results indicated that near-zero MRR (2.9 × 10−6) and narrow FWHM (about 3.5 deg) could be obtained by optimizing the geometrical parameters. More… Show more

“…Regarding the type of cover, the inner film was gold or silver. The thickness of the deposited bimetallic layers was considered from the existing literature [ 35 ] for gold layers and [ 36 , 37 ] for silver layers. Based on the previous works, the total thickness of the bimetallic layers was estimated as h = 10 nm, and the contribution of the individual metals was 50% because the probes that the multilayer covers work better with thinner silver layers [ 38 ].…”

“…The thickness of these layers is 𝑑 4 . The single layer thickness of graphene is 0.34 nm [24]. Thus, 𝑑 4 can be expressed as 𝑑 4 = 𝐿 × 0.34 𝑛𝑚, where 𝐿 is the number of graphene layers.…”

“…In the previous work [23], the performance of the fundamental linear polarized (LP01) mode in optical fiber SPR sensor has been studied for different operating wavelengths, where the study was related only to single-mode fiber. In this paper, the performance of guided modes in SPR sensor is examined for some selected few-mode fibers, which are an ideal compromise between singlemode and multimode fibers [24]. The study is applied on a D-shaped sensor structure with graphene layer due to its superior performance as mentioned earlier.…”

“…Also, they study the influence of the number of graphene layers on sensitivity. As a result, the designed sensor's maximum sensitivity reached 192 deg/refractive index unit (RIU) [27].…”
