Sensitivity and Specificity of Hepatitis B Virus Screening via Rapid Immunoassay Chromatographic Test

Abstract: Introduction: In low-income and high hepatitis B and C virus burden countries like Pakistan, it is important to develop cheap yet efficient strategies in diagnosing as well as treating hepatitis. The aim of this study is to assess the sensitivity and specificity of serum hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg) via Rapid Immunoassay Chromatographic Test (RICT) for the screening of hepatitis B, compared to the gold standard laboratory-based method. Methods: The study was conducted in the Hepatology Clinic… Show more

“…The examination could be conducted at the nearest first-level health facility during the first antenatal care visit, ideally before 20 weeks of gestation. For pregnant women more than 20 weeks of gestation, screening tests and treatment should be conducted as soon as possible [ 1 – 10 , 12 14 ]. All children born to mothers with reactive HBsAg should undergo HBsAg and anti-HBs status evaluation at 9 to 12 months of age (at least 3 months after the final dose of HBV vaccine [ 13 ].…”

“…Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and positive and negative predictive values were calculated using MedCalc ( https://www.medcalc.org/ ) (MedCalc Software Ltd, Acacialaan, Ostend, Belgium). 32 In addition to the clinical and analytical performance evaluations conducted, we compared the general characteristics of the assays used, including time taken for the run, estimated cost per test, and the technical experience required.…”

“…The HBsAg rapid Immunochromatographic test has a sensitivity and specificity of about 91% and 98%, respectively. 10 Test results for hepatitis B were collected from the lab and a hard copy filed with the in-charge nurse at OPD. Participants were called by telephone to receive their results.…”
