Background Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection during pregnancy is a significant concern due to the risk of vertical transmission to the newborn, posing serious health complications. Understanding the effectiveness of intervention programs is paramount, especially in regions where comprehensive research is sparse. This study delves into the efficacy of the HBV elimination program in Garut Regency, West Java, Indonesia, targeting pregnant women and their newborns. Material/Methods This cross-sectional research encompassed 100 HBsAg-positive pregnant women who delivered at a singular facility in Garut Regency and their 62 offspring. Clinical data collection was rigorous, and HBsAg status was determined using rapid test kits, employing the precision of the 2-sided sandwich assay immunochromatography method. Data interpretation was multifaceted, involving univariate, bivariate, and multiple regression logistic analyses. Results Notably, 16.95% of women, previously diagnosed as HBsAg-negative by initial health assessments, were subsequently diagnosed as positive at the specialized referral hospital. A noteworthy finding was that children administered with the HBV vaccine manifested a significantly diminished Positive-HBsAg status ( P =0.029). Intriguingly, a majority of the maternal variables displayed a direct correlation with the HBsAg status of their offspring. The protective role of the HBV vaccine against HBV infection stood out distinctly (OR=0.326; CI 0.019–5.554; P =0.029). Conclusions While our center successfully met the desired HBsAg testing coverage in pregnant women, the administration of the hepatitis B vaccine to infants born to HBsAg-positive mothers lags behind the intended target. Emphasizing the vaccination’s vital role, our study underscores its significance as a frontline defense for such infants.

Background: Autoantibodies are vital biomarkers for the diagnosis, assessment and prognostic determination of various autoimmune disorders.Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the two AtheNA Multi-Lyte® systems for the detection of various autoantibodies.Methods: A total of 105 systemic lupus erythematosus patients, 35 patients with other autoimmune diseases (diseased controls), and 30 healthy volunteers (healthy controls) at Zagazig University Hospitals, Zagazig city, Al Sharqia governorate were tested for anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) antibodies using indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) and the AtheNA Multi-Lyte® anti-nuclear antibodies-II system between May 2020 and April 2022. Seventy-five patients with clinically suspected autoimmune vasculitis (AIV) and 25 healthy volunteers were also tested for anti-myeloperoxidase and anti-proteinase 3 antibodies using IIF, the AtheNA Multi-Lyte® AIV system, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).Results: The AtheNA anti-dsDNA test (98.5%) was more specific than IIF (96.9%) for diagnosing systemic lupus erythematosus, but both tests had the same sensitivity (38.1%). Combining both methods increased sensitivity to 47.6%, while increasing the cut-off of the AtheNA anti-dsDNA test to 134 international units/mL increased specificity to 100%. The AtheNA Multi-Lyte AIV system exhibited substantial agreement with IIF regarding anti-myeloperoxidase testing (κ = 0.65) and almost perfect agreement with ELISA (κ = 0.85). The AtheNA Multi-Lyte® AIV system exhibited perfect agreement with IIF (κ = 1) and substantial agreement with ELISA for anti-proteinase 3 testing (κ = 0.63).Conclusion: AtheNA Multi-Lyte® systems appear to be reliable for anti-dsDNA, anti-myeloperoxidase, and anti-proteinase 3 screening and may be an optimal choice for monitoring anti-dsDNA levels.What this study adds: It is necessary to evaluate various autoantibodies detection assays to increase both sensitivity and specificity of autoimmune diseases diagnostic approaches. AtheNA Multi-Lyte® systems appear to be reliable for anti-dsDNA, anti-myeloperoxidase, and anti-proteinase 3 screening and may be an optimal choice for monitoring anti-dsDNA levels.

Background: About 2 billion people in the world are exposed to hepatitis B virus. Africa contributes 25% of the global Hepatitis B burden and prevalence in Uganda is 4.3%. Routine testing to establish the burden, improve prevention and control through early diagnosis and management are rare in hospital settings. We aimed at establishing the prevalence and factors associated with hepatitis B infection among adults attending outpatient clinic at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) in Uganda. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among outpatients attending MRRH. Consecutive sampling method was used to recruit participants. Interviewer-administered questionnaires were used to collect data. Blood samples were collected to test HBsAg. Summary statistics were used to describe the socio-demographic characteristics of study participants and the proportion of Serostatus for hepatitis B infection. Bivariate followed by multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the factors associated with hepatitis B infections. All independent variables with p-values <0.2 were entered into a multivariate model to adjust for confounding. A p value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 400 participants were recruited. 64.5% were females (n=258) and aged 18-29 years (48.5%, n=193). Overall, 22 (5.5%) participants were found to be seropositive for hepatitis B infection. Residing in Kiruhura district (AOR = 11.9, 95% CI: 2.40-59.25, p<0.003) was significantly associated with hepatitis B infection while being female (AOR = 0.3, 95% CI: 0.11-0.88, p<0.018) was protective. Conclusion: Prevalence of hepatitis B infection among adult patients attending outpatient clinic at MRRH was 5.5% with male gender and residing in Kiruhura district as factors associated with high prevalence of hepatitis B infection. Ministry of Health should scale up hepatitis B routine testing and treatment at MRRH and its catchment area, with special control programs such as screening, vaccination, and sensitization involving men.
