Sensitivity and Specificity Improvement in Abdominal Obesity Diagnosis Using Cluster Analysis during Waist Circumference Cut-Off Point Selection

Abstract: Introduction. The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of metabolic phenotypes during the construction of ROC curves for waist circumference (WC) cutpoint selection. Materials and Methods. A total of 1,902 subjects of both genders were selected from the Maracaibo City Metabolic Syndrome Prevalence Study database. Two-Step Cluster Analysis (TSCA) was applied to select metabolically healthy and sick men and women. ROC curves were constructed to determine WC cutoff points by gender. Results. Through… Show more

“…To this end, although anthropometric data are fundamental tools in the assessment of patients with endocrinemetabolic and cardiovascular disorders, specific subsets may require joint anthropometric and laboratory evaluation to improve diagnostic acuity. This is the case of metabolically ill subjects with normal anthropometric parameters, a group that has propelled the concept of ''metabolic phenotypes'', which is currently undergoing intensive research in the field of endocrinology [42,43].…”

“…[1415] However, some studies implied that there was no main causal role between the AF reduction and obesity comorbidities. The visceral AF decrement was considered to be more crucial than subcutaneous fat layer in association with obesity health risks.…”

“…The subjects in the CANTOS study were evenly overweight, with an interquartile range (IQR) that suggested obesity type I in some of them. It would be interesting to see how the effectivity of canakinumab might influence (or vice versa, becomes influenced) metabolic phenotypes, such as normal weight/overweight but metabolically obese and metabolically healthy obese subjects (20). As a matter of fact, IL-1 pathway blockade has been proposed to ameliorate insulin resistance and cardiometabolic risk for over 20 years, due to enhancement of adipose-derived lowgrade inflammation.…”
