Sensitivity Analysis of TRL Calibration in Waveguide Integrated Membrane Circuits

Abstract: We present a sensitivity analysis on TRL calibrated -parameter measurements of membrane circuits in the WR-03 waveguide band (220-325 GHz). The impact of waveguide and membrane circuit misalignment, as well as waveguide dimension mismatch is investigated. The analysis is performed for the thru-reflect-line (TRL) calibration applied to E-plane split waveguide blocks carrying membrane circuits. The analysis shows a large influence of the waveguide width tolerance on transmission and reflection phase after the TR… Show more

“…The problem of modelling of membrane circuits is stated still in the papers [3], [4] and the monograph [5], and is of interest by now days. We note some papers in this area [6]- [11] and other applications [12]- [16] to nonlinear problems attacked by the fixed point method [17].…”

“…Permittivity on datasheet of RT/Duroid 5880LZ is 1.96, however it can be adjusted to 1.93-1.94 in practical design, and (c) unavoidable inconsistency of SIW-coaxial transition, due to the inconsistency electrical performance of the coaxial connectors and especially manual welding of the transitions which are integrated as parts of the calibration kits. The numerical method can be used to evaluate the impact on the measured results from the inconsistent electrical performances of transitions [9]; however, here we propose an experimental method by using uniform SIW-coaxial transitions and mechanical fixtures for final check, as shown in Fig. 9.…”

“…Thru-reflect-line (TRL) calibration method was first proposed by Engen and Hoer [7], which has been widely used in the correction of systematic errors in connection with measurements by vector network analysers (VNAs). Recently, efforts have been made to develop calibration techniques for residual errors, uncertainty, stability, sensitivity analysis of measured results, and multiport devices [8][9][10]. However, there were very few researches on the calibration of the SIW-based circuit.…”

“…In membrane structures, the disadvantages with a dielectric support substrate at high millimeter-wave and sub-millimeter-wave frequencies are overcome by using a very thin substrate that is suspended in the air. It enables the design of wideband waveguide transitions with very low losses [20].…”
