Abstract. Transport parameters obtained from laboratory tracer experiments were used to evaluate the stochastic form of the equilibrium convection-dispersion equation (CDE) in describing the transition of scale, i.e. from the column or local scale to a larger field scale. Local-scale solute breakthrough curves (BTCs) were measured in 1-m-long and 0.3-m-diameter undisturbed soil columns by means of time-domain reflectometry at six depths for a 79-h input pulse of chloride. The localscale data were analysed in terms of the equilibrium CDE and the mobile-immobile non-equilibrium transport model (MIM). At the local scale, the MIM transport model better described the observed early breakthrough and the tailing of the BTC than did the CDE. A linear regression analysis indicated that the relationship between the hydrodynamic dispersion D and pore-water velocity v was of the form D = 31v l.92 (correlation r v,D = 0.74). Averaging of the local-scale BTCs across the field produced a large-scale or field-scale mean BTC; at the greatest observation depth (0.8 m) the fieldscale dispersivity / = l equals 0.656 m. The results further showed that for large values of the mean dispersion coefficient, , local-scale dispersion is an important mechanism for field-scale solute spreading, whereas the standard deviation, s D , and the correlation between v and D, r vD , have negligible effects on field-scale transport. Stochastic stream tube models supplemented with statistical properties of local-scale transport parameters provide a practical and computationally efficient tool to describe heterogeneous solute transport at large spatial scales.

Soil hydrological models are inherently imperfect because they abstract and simplify “real” hydrological patterns and processes. Indeed, an important aim of modeling is to establish the simplest description possible for adequately addressing a particular problem. Also, models are frequently based on input data that are known to be inadequate for some practical purpose. Thus, uncertainties in model outputs originate from uncertainties in input data, which include measurement and interpolation errors, and in models that include conceptual, logical, mathematical, and computational errors. Understanding the causes and consequences of uncertainty in soil hydrological modeling is useful for: (i) establishing the utility of data and models as decision‐support tools; (ii) directing resources towards improving data and models, and (iii) seeking alternative ways of managing soils when the opportunities for accurate modeling are limited. This chapter focuses on statistical methods for assessing uncertainty in soil data and models, propagating uncertainties through models, and assessing the contribution of different sources of uncertainty to the overall uncertainties in model predictions. In addition, it explores the impacts of scale, and changes between scales, on the outcomes of an uncertainty analysis. It concentrates on physically based models of soil water flow and solute transport, and provides numerous examples from the literature here

Abstract:The HYDRUS-1D and HYDRUS (2D/3D) computer software packages are widely used finite element models for simulating the one-, and two-or three-dimensional movement of water, heat, and multiple solutes in variably-saturated media, respectively. While the standard HYDRUS models consider only the fate and transport of individual solutes or solutes subject to first-order degradation reactions, several specialized HYDRUS add-on modules can simulate far more complex biogeochemical processes. The objective of this paper is to provide a brief overview of the HYDRUS models and their add-on modules, and to demonstrate possible applications of the software to the subsurface fate and transport of chemicals involved in coal seam gas extraction and water management operations. One application uses the standard HYDRUS model to evaluate the natural soil attenuation potential of hydraulic fracturing chemicals and their transformation products in case of an accidental release. By coupling the processes of retardation, first-order degradation and convective-dispersive transport of the biocide bronopol and its degradation products, we demonstrated how natural attenuation reduces initial concentrations by more than a factor of hundred in the top 5 cm of the soil. A second application uses the UnsatChem module to explore the possible use of coal seam gas produced water for sustainable irrigation. Simulations with different irrigation waters (untreated, amended with surface water, and reverse osmosis treated) provided detailed results regarding chemical indicators of soil and plant health, notably SAR, EC and sodium concentrations. A third application uses the HP1 module to analyze trace metal transport involving cation exchange and surface complexation sorption reactions in a soil leached with coal seam gas produced water following some accidental water release scenario. Results show that the main process responsible for trace metal migration in soil is complexation of naturally present trace metals with inorganic ligands such as (bi)carbonate that enter the soil upon infiltration with alkaline produced water. The examples were selected to show how users can tailor the required model complexity to specific needs, such as for rapid screening or risk assessments of various chemicals nder generic soil conditions, or for more detailed site-specific analyses of actual subsurface pollution problems.
