The control of the determination of concrete depends on the basic properties of the desired concrete and thanks to the type of granular mixture of concrete. We arrive at the required concrete quality. And in this study, we can identify the granular distribution class of concrete using the fractal model. In particular, the granular distribution can be determined by the fractal dimension, either for each granular component separately, or for the dry granular mixture of the concrete. The fractional dimension is obtained by transforming the particle size curve to a fractal line. In this study, we used some experimental results obtained from projects already carried out in arid regions. Knowing that we have applied parameters such as granular extent and fractional dimension to the study of these existing projects, we can define a dry mix of concrete through the granular distribution. Therefore, we used the program that we proposed previously of transforming the grain size curves to a fractal line which was obtained for each grain mixture with a very acceptable correlation.

Damage Diagnosis for Offshore Wind Turbine Foundations Based on the Fractal Dimension

Cost-competitiveness of offshore wind depends heavily in its capacity to switch preventive maintenance to condition-based maintenance. That is, to monitor the actual condition of the wind turbine (WT) to decide when and which maintenance needs to be done. In particular, structural health monitoring (SHM) to monitor the foundation (support structure) condition is of utmost importance in offshore-fixed wind turbines. In this work a SHM strategy is presented to monitor online and during service a WT offshore jacket-type foundation. Standard SHM techniques, as guided waves with a known input excitation, cannot be used in a straightforward way in this particular application where unknown external perturbations as wind and waves are always present. To face this challenge, a vibration-response-only SHM strategy is proposed via machine learning methods. In this sense, the fractal dimension is proposed as a suitable feature to identify and classify different types of damage. The proposed proof-of-concept technique is validated in an experimental laboratory down-scaled jacket WT foundation undergoing different types of damage.

Post‐earthquake damage evaluation of non‐ductile RC moment frames using surface crack patterns

In this paper, a methodology is developed for seismic damage identification of non-ductile reinforced concrete moment frames using surface crack images. A comprehensive database comprising 264 surface crack patterns from quasistatic test results of 61 non-ductile beam-column joint specimens at various damage levels is collected. The database covers a broad range of structural and geometric properties. Multifractal dimensions of the column and joint regions of damaged beam-column subassembly images are obtained and used as the complexity and irregularity index of the surface crack patterns. Predictive equations are developed that estimate the peak drift ratio during an earthquake using the multifractal dimensions of surface crack patterns. Six scenarios are considered for obtaining the predictive equations. The developed empirical equations rely on the multifractal dimensions along with the structural properties of the non-ductile beam-column joint. The peak drift ratio estimated by the proposed methodology can finally be used as the input engineering demand parameter to the existing fragility curves in the literature to identify the probability of exceedance from damage states of non-ductile reinforced concrete moment frames.
