Sensitivity analysis and optimal design of non-linear structures

Abstract: Sensitivity analysis for non-linear elastic structures in regular and critical states is ÿrst discussed including design parameters and initial imperfections. Next, the optimal design problem is formulated by considering imperfect structures and setting constraints on de ections and stresses. For structures with unstable postcritical response the limit load constraint is introduced in the optimization procedure. Several examples of truss optimization are provided. The level of initial imperfections can be rega… Show more

“…It is also important to include the effects of load and geometry imperfections in the optimization model [5,6]. Generally, the presence of initial imperfections eliminates the bifurcation points, yielding either limit points for asymmetrical and unstable symmetric bifurcations or stable paths without critical points for stable-symmetric bifurcations [7].…”

“…Most of the previous works are focused on the uncoupled case [15,6]. On the other hand, this work focuses on the coupled case and the dependence of the temperature field on the design variables is accounted for.…”

“…Since, generally, the critical equilibrium states, lacking conditions of symmetry, are limit points, many of these works consider, in a theoretically consistent way, only this kind of simple critical state. In the works of Wu and Arora [1], Ohsaki and Nakamura [2], Oblak et al [3], Mroz and Piekarski [4], design sensitivity analysis of critical load factor requires the assumption that the critical point is a limit point.…”
