Sensitivity Analysis and Anaerobic Digestion Modeling: A Scoping Review

Abstract: A growing awareness of global climate change has led to an increased interest in investigating renewable energy sources, such as the anaerobic digestion of biomass. This process utilizes a wide range of microbial communities to degrade biodegradable material in feedstock through a complex series of biochemical interactions. Anaerobic digestion exhibits nonlinear dynamics due to the complex and interacting biochemical processes involved. Due to its dynamic and nonlinear behavior, uncertain feedstock quality, an… Show more

“…Conversely, a global SA is used to investigate the effects of large variations in model parameters on model outputs [21]. The critical aspect of a complex model (such as ADM1) with several input parameters and output parameters is identifying the most influential input parameter or variable on the model's outputs [22]. There is a significant fluctuation in the results when specific assumptions are changed when sensitivity is high; these assumptions must be extremely well established.…”

“…Biogas, being the product of the methanation reaction, contains high levels of toxic pollutants, mainly methane (CH 4 ), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), which cause respiratory illnesses and contribute to climate change by their nature as greenhouse gases if they are exposed to ambient air [5]. This is why technical landfill centers accompanied by treatment and energy recovery units have the double advantage of simultaneously being a green and clean renewable energy production sector, via biogas like a source of green energy and alternative O. DRISSI EL BOUZAIDI AND K. OUAZZANI 753 to replace fossil fuel as natural gas, coal and oil, and a solution to mitigate the risks of global warming linked to greenhouse gas emissions [6], whose the major preoccupation of lot of countries to adopt a new approaches to develop a proper energy, and to improve practices for emission reduction [7].…”

“…For example, HW can be utilized to produce biofuels like methane, bioethanol, biodiesel through various processes, including pyrolysis, anaerobic digestion (AD), hydrothermal liquefaction and others (Adjama et al, 2022). Anaerobic digestion (AD) is one of the unique and well-organized worldwide technology used to treat organic waste streams to generate a renewable energy in the form of biogas (Astals et al, 2015 andBarahmand, 2022). AD is an integrated biochemical process that is operated in four major steps: hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis and methanogenesis (Singh et al, 2012) and it is classified into AD with inoculum and AD without inoculum (Abdulkarim et al, 2019).…”
