Sensitive couture for interactive garment modeling and editing

Abstract: Figure 1: "2D or not 2D?" This timeless question is rendered moot by Sensitive Couture, our tool for simultaneous, synchronized modeling and editing of both a 2D garment pattern (top) and its corresponding 3D drape (bottom). AbstractWe present a novel interactive tool for garment design that enables, for the first time, interactive bidirectional editing between 2D patterns and 3D high-fidelity simulated draped forms. This provides a continuous, interactive, and natural design modality in which 2D and 3D repres… Show more

“…Roboson et al [6] proposed a context-sensitive hand-drawn garment modeling technique. Umetani et al [7] proposed a contour garment editing and modeling method called Sensitive Contour. Berthouzoz et al [8] studied algorithms for converting a given piece to be stitched into a three-dimensional garment.…”

“…Since the simulation process can be slow, Luo and Yuen [2005] efficiently rebuilt relaxed 3D meshes from edits to 2D patterns. Other research has looked at designing useable interfaces for rapid and intuitive design of new patterns [Volino and Magnenat-Thalmann 2005;Umetani et al 2011]. Researchers have also looked at sketch-based interfaces for designing garments and other 3D objects composed of 2D pieces [Decaudin et al 2006;Turquin et al 2007;Mori and Igarashi 2007;Igarashi et al 2008b;Volino et al 2009;Robson et al 2011].…”

“…This process requires significant expertise and is very time-consuming. Recent sketch-based garment design systems [Wang et al 2003;Decaudin et al 2006;Turquin et al 2007;Robson et al 2011;Umetani et al 2011] facilitate this process, but usually produce garment models that are simpler than real-world garments. Creating detailed 3D garment models remains a challenging task.…”

“…Our system includes an interactive garment simulator to generate a 3D model of the garment and drape it on a mannequin. The simulator extends Sensitive Couture [Umetani et al 2011] with a small set of features that allow it to support a larger variety of input patterns.…”
