Sense of coherence and pain experience in older age

Abstract: With respect to our analytical model, in which pain experience was the criterion variable, morbidity and the sense of coherence are important predictors of pain. Moreover, we found evidence for the salutogenic idea that the sense of coherence represents a mediator variable as it pools resistance/deficits influences on pain. We recommend a prospective design to explore these assumed causal chains in future research.

“…The role of SOC as a significant predictor of quality of life has been demonstrated in many previous studies and analyzes which proved that the higher the SOC, the better the quality of life (Eriksson, Lindström, 2007;Floyd et al, 2011;Langius-Eklöf et al, 2009). In addition, many studies in different populations have shown that the sense of coherence plays the role of a mediator in the relationships between various variables (Gana, 2001;Kivimäki et al, 2002;Cohen, Savaya, 2003;Hogh, Mikkelson, 2005;Ying, Lee, Tsal, 2007;Kimhi et al, 2010;Braun-Lewensohn, Sagy, Roth, 2011;Tang et al, 2013;Wiesmann, Dezutter, Hannich, 2014; SENSE OF COHERENCE & FEAR OF COVID-19 Krok, 2015). SOC was an independent predictor of the quality of life among patients with ischemic heart disease (Silarova et al, 2012), mediated the relationship between adverse experiences and psychological well-being (Gana, 2001) and between symptoms, stress and coping with it and the perception of health and life satisfaction (Rohani, Abedi, Sundberg, Langius-Eklöf, 2015.…”

“…The sense of context explained 63 % of variance in well-being in this study. and Wiesmann, Dezutter, and Hannich (2014) investigated the role that SOC and generalized resistance resources have for older people's experience of life satisfaction among 387 Germans with a mean age of 73.8 years. The results showed that the SOC-as the ability to cope in everyday life-, social support and selfesteem were factors that contributed to older people's satisfaction with life (Table 15.1).…”
