Sensation seeking: a personality trait characteristic of adolescent girls and young women with eating disorders?

Abstract: The aim of the following study was to evaluate the role of sensation seeking in eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia), taking into account the subtypes (purging versus nonpurging) and the concept of binge‐eating disorder. The study involved 141 adolescent girls and young women, aged 14 to 25 years who lived in the French speaking part of Switzerland (79 clinical subjects with eating disorders according to DSM‐IV criteria, and 62 control subjects without eating disorders from the general population). “…These results are similar to the ones found in bulimia nervosa (Battaglia et al, 1996; Rossier et al, 2000) and in overeating behaviors (Davis et al, 2004). Patient A also showed low harm avoidance and behavioral inhibition scores, whereas patient B demonstrated a particularly elevated reward dependence score, suggesting possible modifications in other neurotransmitter systems too (serotonin and norepinephrine).…”

“…In particular, individuals with bulimina nervosa or anorexia nervosa characterized by binge eating and purging have higher SS scores than controls [29,30], as well as having higher NS scores on the Cloninger scale [31,32]. In contrast, individuals with the restrictive type of anorexia nervosa have lower SS scores relative to controls [29]. However, in a recent review of this literature, Cassin and von Ranson [33] have provided evidence that challenges the general view that all restrictors are rigid and inhibited, whereas all bingers are impulsive sensation seekers.…”

“…Using the Temperament and Character Inventory and self-reported weight and height, obese patients were found to score lower on Persistence and Self-Directedness (scales related to Conscientiousness) and higher on Novelty Seeking (impulsive, curious, disorderly)(17). Higher scores on Novelty Seeking have been associated with overeating and lower scores with decreased food consumption (19). …”
