Objectives: This study assesses the pattern of semen analysis results in male partners of infertile couples at Gimbie Adventist Hospital, Western Ethiopia, 2021. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study on 131 semen samples of male partners of infertile couples was conducted at Gimbie Adventist Hospital from 5 September 2021 to 5 October 2021. All semen samples were processed and analyzed according to methods and standards outlined by the World Health Organization laboratory manual for the examination and processing of human semen 2010. The data were coded and entered into EpiData version 3.1, and then cleaned and exported to Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS for Windows version 25) for analysis. The results were presented in tables, figures, and charts. Results: The age of study participants ranges from 20 to 65 years with a mean age of 30.2 ± 8.1 years. Sperm cell count, morphology, total motility, and vitality below the World Health Organization reference level were found in 48.9%, 27.5%, 43.5%, and 67.2% of the analyzed samples, respectively. Low power of hydrogen and high viscosity were observed in 31.3% and 16.8% of the semen samples, respectively. The majority, 84%, had one or more abnormal semen analysis parameters. Asthenozoospermia (43.5%), necrozoospermia (25.2%), oligozoospermia (24%), azoospermia (24%), and oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (25.2%) were the severe forms of abnormal semen analysis findings detected in this study. The decline in sperm cell morphology and motility were noticed after the age of 31–34 years. Conclusion: In this study, both sperm quantity and quality were more affected when compared to similar studies. Only 16% of analyzed samples had normal semen parameters. Given this finding, identifying risk factors and introducing advanced diagnostic modalities for the workup of male infertility in the study area are highly recommended.

Background: Infertility is a condition with psychological, economic, medical implications resulting in trauma, stress, particularly in a social set-up, with a strong emphasis on child-bearing. The prevalence of infertility in the general population is 8-12% worldwide. Of this, the male factor is responsible for 40-50%.Semen analysis is an indispensable diagnostic tool in the evaluation of the male partners of infertile couples. Materials and Method: Seminal fluid from the male partners was analysed in the clinical laboratory, JIIU'S IIMSR Medical College, Warudi, Jalna during June 2018 to June 2019 using the World Health Organization (WHO) 2010 criteria for human semen characteristics. Parameters like semen volume, liquefaction time, sperm concentration, motility, vitality, morphology were evaluated. Results: Total 122 males were evaluated in the study. Mean age of presentation was 28.95 yrs. 76 cases [62.30%] found to have abnormal semen analysis and 46 [37.70%] with normal pattern. Abnormalities in sperm no. were seen as most common abnormality 40 patients [32.79%], followed by abnormality in motility 20 patients [16.39%]. Normozoospermia [48.36%], Asthenozoospermia [14.75%], Teratozoospermia [2.46%], Asthenozoospermia with teratozoospermia [1.64%], Oligozoospermia [9.02%], Oligoasthenozoospermia [6.56%], Oligozoospermia with teratozoospermia[3.28%], Oligoastheno-teratozoospermia [2.46%], Azoospermia [11.47%] Conclusion: Though semen analysis has limited role in evaluation of male factor infertility but still it is indispensable and cost effective tool in evaluation of male factor infertility, particularly in rural population.

Background: Infertility is a common reason for gynecological clinic visits in Nigeria. Men contribute significantly to the cause of infertility; however male factor infertility remain underreported compared to commonly reported female factor infertility. This study aimed to evaluate the abnormalities of semen parameters among male partners of infertile couples in Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Edo State, Nigeria. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study of 285 semen samples of male partners of infertile couples was conducted at Irrua specialist teaching hospital. The laboratory staff carried out analysis of the semen samples using set parameters outlined by the World Health Organization laboratory manual for the examination and processing of human semen. Socio-demographic data of the participants was also taken in a proforma. The data obtained was then analyzed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Results: The age range of participants in this study was 20 to 65 years, with a mean age of 33.38 years. A total of 80.7% of the cases reviewed had one or more abnormal semen parameters. In 45.6%, 51.6%, and 47.0% of the analyzed samples, sperm cell count, morphology and total motility were below the WHO reference level, respectively. The severe forms of abnormal semen analysis findings detected in this study were asthenozoospermia (47%), oligozoospermia (15.8%), azoospermia (45.6%), and oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (15.5%). There was also statistically significant finding of rising cases of oligospermia with increasing age among the participants Conclusions: Male factor infertility although grossly under reported, contributes significantly to the burden of infertility in our setting. There is a need to raise awareness so that men are properly evaluated and treated.
