Semicontinuous cultures of Four microalgae with a nonconventional medium

Abstract: Four microalgae, Chaetoceros sp., Phaeodactylum tricomutum Bohlin, Tetraselmis sp. and Pavlova lutheri (Droop) Hibberd, were kept in semicontinuous cultures at dilution rates between 75 and 15%, depending on species and medium. The quantity and quality of the biomass produced using a nonconventional culture medium were compared to that obtained with a traditional formulation. The biomass produced did not differ qualitatively as a result of medium or dilution rates, but the daily yield of Tetraselmis sp. and of… Show more

“…Some microalgae used as diets for bivalve mollusks (e.g., Chaetoceros sp., Pavlova lutheri , and Phaeodactylum tricornutum ) contain 29– 52% of protein, 10–29% of lipids, and 8–18% of carbohydrates (López‐Elías and Voltolina 1993). But in this study the oysters were mainly fed with feces of tilapia.…”

“…The chemical proximate composition of the bioflocs was analyzed to determine protein and lipid contents. The protein content was measured following the methodology described by Lowry et al [ 25 ] with modifications [ 26 ]; the carbohydrate concentration was estimated by the “phenol-sulfuric acid” method [ 27 ]. Total lipids were extracted according to Bligh and Dyer [ 28 ], and the quantification was done following the methodology described by Pande et al [ 29 ].…”

“…Total lipid content was determined colorimetrically according to Pande et al (1963). After being extracted, the method of Bligh & Dyer (1959) modified by López-Elías et al (1993) was used. Total protein content was determined colorimetrically according to the method of Lowry et al (1951) modified by Malara & Charra (1972) and following the recommendation for its extraction by Clayton et al (1988) and López-Elías (1993).…”

Quantification of total lipid and protein content were performed with a spectrophotometer (Cary 100 BIO UV-Visible Spectrophotometer).…”
