Semiautomatic intermittent pneumatic compression device applied to deep vein thrombosis in major orthopedic surgery

Abstract: ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of additional semiautomatic intermittent pneumatic compression device (IPCD) in the prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of lower extremity in these patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery, when compared with the conventional graduated compression stockings alone.MethodsThe data of 112 patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery were retrospectively analyzed. 51 patients who ever received IPCD and graduated compression stockings during major orthopedic surgery were … Show more

“…The literature, however, does not seem to agree on its effectiveness. 3,4,24,25 The ACCP and the AAOS recommend only intermittent pneumatic compression devices (IPCD) for mechanical prophylaxis. 1,2 The ACCP recommends a portable device (which allows walking) for at least 18 hours a day.…”

“…16 In a retrospective study involving 112 patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery, IPC combined with GCS was better than GCS alone in terms of increased blood circulation as measured by Doppler sonography. 17 Again, the majority of studies are based on systematic VTE screening rather than clinical signs of thrombosis, and thus these results should be interpreted with caution.…”

“…This has led to the introduction of several treatment modalities to enhance healing and expedite recovery [ 1 ]. Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) is a special technique that has been mainly used in orthopedic practice to decrease the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and to reduce post-traumatic and post-operative swelling in various clinical situations [ 2 4 ]. Physicians have tried to improve circulation by exerting external pressure on the arms and legs since nineteenth century.…”
