Semi-supervised Convolutional Neural Networks for Flood Mapping using Multi-modal Remote Sensing Data

Abstract: When floods hit populated areas, quick detection of flooded areas is crucial for initial response by local government, residents, and volunteers. Space-borne polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) is an authoritative data sources for flood mapping since it can be acquired immediately after a disaster even at night time or cloudy weather. Conventionally, a lot of domain-specific heuristic knowledge has been applied for PolSAR flood mapping, but their performance still suffers from confusing pixels cause… Show more

“…The research methods suitable for flood disasters still need to be further explored, due to great differences among the different types of natural disasters, especially in terms of cooperative monitoring and emergency assessment [37]. Thus, a new integrated air-space-ground method needed to be proposed to monitor and assess flood disasters based on satellite remote sensing, unmanned aerial vehicle remote sensing and field measurement technology [38]. It should be the focus in the whole link process of flood monitoring and assessment, to carry out the disaster intervention and response at the different developmental stages of disaster situations and reduce flood losses with more precise interdiction based on multi-source means [39,40].…”
