Semi-quantitative risk analysis of a normally unmanned installation facility

Abstract: Risk assessments of industrial facilities, especially offshore oil and gas companies, are required to consider safety, environmental, financial, and company reputation risks. Risk assessments of normally unmanned installation (NUI) facilities usually do not accommodate personnel or employees. Therefore, a risk value cannot be applied when there is a plan to deploy personnel at an NUI. Hence, this study aimed to determine the inherent risk value when security personnel are deployed at an NUI. The NUI to be asse… Show more

“…Another widely used methodology for drilling decisions is quantitative risk assessment. Although this method has shown its applicability within risk assessment, it cannot be considered idealistic due to the following: A lack of systematic approach to rank the possible solutions in terms of effectiveness and efficiency, unconsidered uncertainty associated with cost estimation for implementing a particular solution for a specific downhole problem, and a methodology to estimate the impact of potential solutions during the well construction planning phase [12].…”

“…4 Also, the fluid in the pipes comprises water, CO2, and H2S, all of which are corrosion inhibitors. 5 Between 2001 and 2011, there were around 1978 oil and gas pipeline leakage occurrences in the UK continental shelf. 6 As per the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers, once gas or oil has been spilled into the marine environment, it’s exposed to a variety of weathering conditions, including dispersion, evaporation, dissolution, wave flushing, emulsification, photochemical oxidation, microbial degradation, and adsorption of suspended matter and accumulate on the sea floor.…”

“…Even a low‐risk event that occurs involving a company can have serious consequences that affect its personnel, buildings, costs, and reputation . To prevent accidents, an offshore company should implement the operation safety case contained in a risk assessment . This will help identify and quantify the risks involved in the operations, thereby revealing the risk level.…”

“…They do not require the same mathematical skills as QRA, nor do they require the same amount of data, which mean that it can be applied to risks and strategies where precise data are missing. SQRA is appropriate for calculating the risk involving an offshore company, because it considers both qualitative and quantitative assessments . SQRA is most useful in providing a structured way of ranking risks according to their probabilities, impact or both (severity) and of ranking risk reduction actions for their effectiveness…”
