Semi‐IPNs with Moisture‐Triggered Shape Memory and Self‐Healing Properties

Abstract: Moisture or water has the advantages of being green, inexpensive, and moderate. However, it is challenging to endow water-induced shape memory property and self-healing capability to one single polymer because of the conflicting structural requirement of the two types of materials. In this study, this problem is solved through introducing two kinds of supramolecular interactions into semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs). The hydrogen bonds function as water-sensitive switches, making the material… Show more

“…However, like boronic ester bonds, H‐bonds are susceptible to water molecules that extremely tend to form H‐bonds; namely, a high moisture sensitivity. This can lead to gradually reduced mechanical strength of H‐bonded polymers exposed to conditions of high humidity . Such a drawback, however, can also be used to serve as water‐sensitive triggers or switches for manipulating the self‐healing and mechanical strength of H‐bond‐cross‐linked polymeric materials .…”

“…However, damage with high degree of deformation is hard to be healed since fracture surfaces cannot autonomously come together into need closure for healing. Addressing this problem, a new concept that uses shape memory effect to assist the self-healing process has been explored [46][47][48][49][50][51].…”

“…Its molecular structure is a kind of network usually composed of reversible phase and stationary phase. The stationary phase can be a cross-linked node by chemical reaction or physical reaction, and it plays an important role in building a cross-linking network [1,2]. The reversible phase is usually glassy-amorphous transformation, crystallization-melting transformation, etc., and the phase transition is also varied.…”
