Semi-automatic Low Cost 3D Laser Scanning Systems for Reverse Engineering

Abstract: This paper is focused on the development, implementation and testing of a semi-automated low cost motorized active 3D slit laser scanning system. The scanner is based on the software platform of the DAVID LaserScanner Vision Systems GmbH's. The authors implemented motorized movements on a CNC milling machine, controlling the systems by the Mach3 CNC software. The authors have combined and personalized different software, mainly low cost or open-source: a specific program was written and compiled for processing… Show more

“…To achieve this goal, 3D terrestrial laser scanning and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry are considered to be representative of documentation technology because they create a digital model from recorded data that is nearly identical to the physical geometry [10][11][12][13]. These technologies have relatively cheap operational expenses [14,15] ISPRS Int. J. Geo-Inf.…”

“…This program allows us to transform the PC into a CNC machine control, in which a preview of the toolpath and parameters of the machining process is displayed. The Mach3 program allows one to control the machine based on G-codes, which can be typed manually or generated in CAM programs [ 7 , 17 , 18 ]. The G-codes are designed to define the operating parameters of the spindle and stepper motors for each axis individually.…”

“…Triangulation is suitable for short-to-medium distance measurements (<5-10 m). An early example of triangulation based 3D laser cameras are slit scanners due to their optical and mechanical simplicity and cost (Galantucci et al , 2015). Slit-scanners utilise an angled light line projected onto the target object; deformation of the straight-line projection provides information about the target surface protuberances (Hornberg, 2006).…”
