Semi‐automated delineation of breast cancer tumors and subsequent materialization using three‐dimensional printing (rapid prototyping)

Abstract: 3D printing (rapid prototyping) appears to be feasible. Scenarios for the clinical use of the technology might include presenting the model to the surgeon to provide a better understanding of the tumor's spatial characteristics in the breast, in order to improve decision-making in relation to neoadjuvant chemotherapy or surgical approaches. “…However, it should be noted that less than 60 min were required for printing of each model in Schulz-Wendtland's study, hence the time cost may not be a concern for breast cancer patients. 1 With technological advancement and more widespread use, the monetary and time costs of producing 3D models should also decrease.…”

“…The current evidence suggests that 3D printed models may have a role in preoperative counseling of surgical patients. This may be particularly relevant to breast cancer surgery, where cosmetic outcome and post‐op quality of life are of key significance . By educating breast cancer patients with personalized 3D models, a clear and comprehensible message can be delivered and the patient may have a better understanding on the planned surgery, the associated risks, and the anticipated outcomes.…”

“…These models also help inform patients by providing a tangible depiction of their disease and anatomy, thereby enhancing communication at the time of surgical consultation . The feasibility of 3D printing breast tumors and breast surgical guides have been reported, but to our knowledge the use of patient‐specific 3D printed models in patients with breast cancer that depict tumor‐to‐breast ratio has not been reported . Incorporating 3D printed models in the care of breast cancer patients may enhance an individual's understanding of their disease, thereby improving communication during the surgical consultation.…”
