Semen quality of 1346 healthy men, results from the Chongqing area of southwest China

Abstract: A high proportion of healthy males in Chongqing area of southwest China had abnormal semen parameters values according to WHO criteria. The semen parameters in the study population were markedly different from those reported for the other Chinese, USA and European populations. The differences remain unexplained and may be due to demographic characteristics, lifestyle, environmental factors or genetic variation.

“…In Denmark and other countries some 25%-40% of young men have npg sperm counts that are low according to this biological reference [3]. A large and comprehensive population based study in the Chongqing region of Southwest China indicated that 60% of men had at least one semen characteristic below current World Health Organization (WHO) reference values [4]. The causes of low sperm count and poor semen quality are unknown in the vast majority of cases.…”

“…Previous data from screened and general populations showed that there are obvious differences in semen quality between continents [6], countries [7] and even different areas in the same country [6,8,9]. Some of the studies also revealed temporal differences [10].…”

“…Profound comments on this regard have been made and published in the Special Issue in Asian Journal of Andrology on "Semen analysis in 21st Century Medicine" in Issue 1 in 2010 [2][3][4][5]. In this letter, I would like to present some of my views and suggestions on reference limits of semen parameters.Previous data from screened and general populations showed that there are obvious differences in semen quality between continents [6], countries [7] and even different areas in the same country [6,8,9]. Some of the studies also revealed temporal differences [10].…”

“…16 In China, up to 63% of men have at least one semen parameter value lower than the WHO lower reference values (2010), with potential implications for fertility. [30][31][32][33] Other groups have also looked at sperm concentrations as a function of birth date, finding lower sperm concentrations in men born more recently. 34,35 Several recent studies have readdressed the question of whether there has been a secular trend towards a decline in sperm concentration.…”
