“…Coy et al (2009) used a plant extract to increase the viscosity of a medium for swine spermatozoa and observed an increase in the STR index and the percentage of progressively motile spermatozoa, although they also reported lower VCL, VSL and VAP values in comparison to the control medium. Corcini et al (2011) found an increase in the percentage of motile spermatozoa after adding gelatin to the BTS extender for short term (three days) preserved swine semen. In our study, this parameter was not different between the extenders.…”

“…In our study, this parameter was not different between the extenders. The literature suggests that changes to motility parameters are dependent on the agent used to increase the viscosity (because it determines whether liquefaction will occur at the temperature at which motility is measured), as well as the degree of viscosity (Corcini et al, 2011;Coy et al, 2009;Salvador et al, 2006;Yániz et al, 2005). Different viscous media, therefore, influence the motility characteristics of the spermatozoa.…”

“…The pre‐oestrous LH surge triggers, in turn, the synthesis and the secretion of cellulose that degrades the cellulose‐based wall. A recent study by Corcini et al. (2011) proposes a hybrid semen treatment process (dilution + immobilization) adding commercial gelatin to semen extender: the gelatin‐entrapped spermatozoa maintain high quality in terms of morphology and motility, and the gelatin‐treated spermatozoa had significantly greater percentages of normal spermatozoa until 96 h of storage.…”

“…With respect to natural mating, AI offers a number of advantages: cost reduction, hygiene improvement, preventive determination of semen quality and better fertility (Okere and Nelson 2005). Nevertheless, AI efficiency is limited by difficulties related to swine reproductive physiology: the sow is characterized by a seasonal variation in the length of oestrus, the interval from oestrus to ovulation and the duration of ovulation (Belstra et al 2004), while boar sperm cells are highly susceptible to dilution and cooling procedures so that AI is routinely performed with liquid-stored semen at 15-20°C for 1-5 days (Johnson et al 2000;Corcini et al 2011).…”
