Semantic web, ubiquitous computing, or internet of things? A macro-analysis of scholarly publications

Abstract: Purpose -The aim is to investigate concepts that are used in depicting future visions of society, as afforded by technology, to (a) map the extent of their use, (b) examine the level of their dominance in different research areas and geographic boundaries, (c) identify potential overlaps, (d) analyse their longitudinal growth, and (e) examine whether any of the identified concepts has assumed an overarching position. Design/methodology/approach -Fourteen concepts, each of which is used to depict visions of fut… Show more

“…Such representations illustrate relationship networks. In other words, the tool enables the creation of maps and network visualisation of the corpus data in which the paired phrases that occur more frequently together are connected and closer to one another (see also Olson, Nolin, & Nelhans, 2015). Tools like VOSviewer have proven to be useful for illustrating not only trends and themes in the data, but also illustrating their limitations in being precisely what they are, namely tools that build upon algorithms that are not always completely transparent for the user.…”

“…Various concepts have been coined and promoted by different scholars and technologists. Olson et al (2015) present a collective of concepts that are used in depicting future visions of society as affordable by technology. The term Internet of Things was introduced by Kevin Ashton in 1999 (Ashton, 2009).…”

“…Ashton visualized that a physical world can be connected to the internet via sensors and actuators which are capable of providing real time information and hence benefit our lives. With time, this notion has been considerable broadened (Olson, Nolin, & Nelhans, 2015). Gubbi et al (Gubbi, Buyya, Marusic, & Palaniswami, 2013) defined IoT as the interconnection of sensing and actuating devices providing the ability to share information across platforms through a unified framework, developing a common operating picture for enabling innovative applications.…”

“…There are millions of scientific articles being published to digital archives on a monthly basis (Khabsa and Giles, 2014;Olson et al, 2015;. Thus, it is a challenging task for researchers and scientists to mine the trends and topics from this large number of scientific documents (Hofmann, 2017;Hassan et al, 2018;Wang et al, 2011).…”
