Semantic similarities between a keyword database and a controlled vocabulary database: An investigation in the antibiotic resistance literature

Abstract: The KeyWords Plus in the Science Citation Index database represents an approach to combining citation and semantic indexing in describing the document content. This paper explores the similarities or dissimilarities between citation‐semantic and analytic indexing. The dataset consisted of over 400 matching records in the SCI and MEDLINE databases on antibiotic resistance in pneumonia. The degree of similarity in indexing terms was found to vary on a scale from completely different to completely identical with … Show more

“…This assumption is reinforced by studies on inter-indexing inconsistencies in intellectual indexing research. For instance, Qin has investigated dissimilarities between citationsemantic and analytic indexing, emphasizing the high degree of variation regarding the keywords and semantic categories used to describe document contents (Qin 2000). Subclasses in boldface occurred more than three times in the list of the k nearest neighbors of the test document To test this assumption we conducted another experiment in order to study human classification of those unsuccessful cases.…”

“…ARRUE & LOPEZ [1991] evaluated the growth pattern of conservation tillage research based primarily on abstracts published in Soils and Fertilizers. QIN [2000] first attempted to use the keywords plus to investigate the antibiotic resistance research. The keyword plus in the SCI database supplied additional search terms extracted from the titles of articles cited by authors in their bibliographies and footnotes [GARFIELD, 1990].…”
