“…In a proper name production (i.e., person's name) study, Cohen and Faulkner (1986) reported that people in a TOT state could retrieve semantic information about target persons such as their occupation or hobbies, but hardly speak out the names. Potential substitutions for the correct name may be more likely to be used if they share semantic or phonetic properties with the correct name (Dell & Reich, 1981;White, Abrams, & Frame, 2013), which suggests that misnamings can occur at different stages of speech production. “…Age-related increases in ToT experiences (hereafter ToTs) are not related to increased vocabulary knowledge throughout adulthood (Facal et al, 2012;Salthouse and Mendell, 2013;Shafto et al, 2017). Consistent evidence supports the hypothesis that the higher frequency of ToTs in older adults is caused by a decline in transmission of the activation from semantic to phonological representations (Burke et al, 1991;James and Burke, 2000;Shafto et al, 2007;Juncos-Rabadán et al, 2010;White et al, 2013). According to this hypothesis, ToTs occur when the activated semantic representation of a word fails to spread the necessary activation to its corresponding phonological representation, making lexical access impossible.…”
