Semantic AsBuilt 3D Modeling of Buildings Under Construction from Laser-Scan Data Based on Local Convexity without an As-Planned Model

Abstract: As-built building information models (BIMs) need to be represented with the composing building elements having their own functional semantic information. In order to generate such as-built BIMs with composing building elements, it is necessary to recognize each of the semantic elements and separate them from each other. In addition, the as-built BIM needs to be generated and updated during or after each major construction activity because most of the structural elements and nonstructural elements (especially f… Show more

“…Some studies on the reverse design that creates 3D models from laser scanning data are as follows: Nahangi et al [26] researched the removal of error from laser scanning data and their clustering. Son et al [27] researched the semantic creation of 3D models required in construction from laser scanning data. Gimemez et al [28] investigated technology related to creating 3D building models from 2D scan data.…”

“…This manual workflow adopts a three stage process, namely: multiple scans are captured from different TLS stations, point cloud data from these multiple scans is integrated through a process known as registration, and BIM is employed to author new objects using the point scans as a reference (Monserrat and Crosetto, 2008; Wang and Cho, 2015). Semi-automated, post processing software can expedite this process, but the procedure lacks integration and full automation (Bosché, 2010; Son, Na and Kim, 2015). A more comprehensive definition of this process is the “Scan-to-BIM” method, which incorporates semi-automated post processing software packages, enabling faster model reproduction time.…”

“…This has been utilized in segmenting tubular structures, such as pipes in Dimitrov and Golparvar-Fard (2015) and Kawashima et al (2014). Region growing has also been utilized in processing of large structural elements for a reinforced concrete bridge consisting of block-like slab/girder elements and cylindrical columns (Walsh et al, 2013), and for a concrete building consisting of rectangular concrete columns, con-crete box beams, and a concrete slab ceiling (Son et al, 2015).…”
