The fruit and seed micromorphology of 22 species of Geranium, representing the eight sections of the genus represented in Iran (G. sectt. Dissecta, Geranium, and Tuberosa of subgen. Geranium; sectt. Batrachioidea, Divaricata, Lucida, Ruberta and Trilopha of subgen. Robertium), have been examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Macro‐ and micromorphological characters, including fruit and seed shape, size, color, hair type and density, mericarp ornamentations, hilum position, seed coat pattern, epidermal cell shape, and anticlinal and periclinal cell walls, are presented. Two microsculpturing patterns are recognized on the mericarp surface: reticulate and pusticulate. The micromorphology of the seed coat showed four distinctive cell patterns. The seed epidermis is constructed either of polygonal, elongated polygonal, or square to rectangular cells. The polygonal type is the most common among the studied species, but the variation in testa cell characters, their size and shape, may provide further information and useful diagnostic characters at specific and infraspecific rank. The shape and color of the seeds are, however, of little systematic value. Fruit characters were found to be important for separating taxa at infrageneric rank and our results show that the species can be separated into subgenera and sections based on fruit morphology.

The petal epidermis and petal anatomy of 11 taxa of Onosma L. were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. Differences in epidermal patterns were observed on the dorsal surface. Domed epidermal cells and non-papillae epidermal cells were seen on the petal surface. Papillae types were lithops, cone-like, finger-like or skittle-cell type. Areolate and rugose types were observed on the non-papillae surface. Principal anatomical structures of petals were similar. Micromorphological features on dorsal surfaces of petals could be useful for species-level diagnosis along with other selected morphological and micromorphological features.

The new combination, Bupleurum candollei Wallich ex de Candolle var. paucefulcrans (C. Y. Wu) X. J. He & C. B. Wang, is proposed. The status of this taxon, endemic to Guizhou, China, has been confused since it was first described in 1963. Morphological and anatomical evidence, based primarily on bractlet number and length, umbel number and length, fruit size and shape, and stem structure indicated that B. hamiltonii N. P. Balakrishnan var. paucefulcrans C. Y. Wu is more closely related to B. candollei than to B. hamiltonii. To evaluate the credibility of the morphological similarity, the phylogenetic relationship of B. candollei var. candollei, B. hamiltonii var. hamiltonii and B. candollei var. paucefulcrans were inferred by Bayesian analysis of nrDNA ITS sequences. The molecular analysis is fully congruent with the morphological data and supports the transfer of the variety to B. candollei.
