SEM morphological survey on the egg shell in the italian Anostracans (Crustacea, Branchiopoda)

Abstract: The screening of the egg shell morphology of all italian species of Anostracans (14) by means of SEM, as well as the analysis of preliminary data on electrophoretical patterns of the adults, concerning the genus Chirocephalus (five species), suggest the need for a reconsideration, from a taxonomical point of view, especially as far as the species of the 'diaphanus' group (Ch . diaphanus, Ch. ruffoi, Ch. salinus, Ch . sibyllae) are concerned .In this light, within the above mentioned group remarkable difference… Show more

“…It has been known that the eggshell of freshwater anostracans normally possesses an ornamented surface (Gilchrist, 1978;Mura, 1986;Shepard and Hill, 2001), which forms a taxonomical tool for the identification of species (Munuswamy and Subramoniam, 1983;Munuswamy et al, 1985;Shepard and Hill, 2001). Little is known about the diversity of the surface topography of the eggshell in genus Artemia.…”

“…Most Artemia cysts that have been studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were reported to have a smooth surface (Gilchrist, 1978;Mazzini, 1978;Mura, 1986;Ramasubramanian and Munuswamy, 1993;Rosowski et al, 1997, Fig. 5;Shepard and Hill, 2001;Spotte and Anderson, 1988, Figs.…”

“…The egg surface has shallow, irregular polygonal fields (Fig. 6h), similar to the ornamental pattern found in the Italian (Mura, 1986), Moroccan (Mura and Thiery, 1986), Spanish (Alonso and Alcaraz, 1984), Russian (Vekhov, 1990), and French (Thiery and Gasc, 1991) populations.…”

“…In this case, the reference description of egg morphology in the literature was from eggs collected directly from adults and not from extracted eggs (Mura, 1986;Rabet, 2010). The principal impediment to the direct determination of species from extracted eggs is the effect of the sediment on the egg morphology.…”
