Abstract:Der bekannteste Vertreter der Orthopocken ist das Variolavirus, der Erreger der "echten" Pocken. Nach einem weltweiten Impfprogramm mit dem nah verwandten Vacciniavirus wurden die Pocken 1978 eradiziert. Die übrigen Orthopoxviren haben ein breites Wirtsspektrum und werden daher wechselnd z. B. als Kuhpocken, Affenpocken, Katzenpocken, Elefantenpocken oder Kamelpocken bezeichnet.
