Self-similar texture for coherent line stylization

Abstract: Figure 1: Shapes drawn with stylized lines using self-similar textures. The bird (above) is a purely 2D figure, while lines are extracted from a 3D model of a horse (below). At different scales the lines appear qualitatively similar, and transitions exhibit temporal coherence. AbstractStylized line rendering for animation has traditionally traded-off between two undesirable artifacts: stroke texture sliding and stroke texture stretching. This paper proposes a new stroke texture representation, the self-similar… Show more

“…Existing methods for temporally-coherent line drawing [Kalnins et al 2003;Bénard et al 2010;Bénard et al 2012] are not directly applicable as they do not ensure the stereo coherence between binocular views when moving from one frame to the next. Considering that our epipolar-slidability handles coherence of viewdependent lines across binocular views, one might be able to extend this concept to time domain across arbitrary view changes.…”

“…There are a variety of rendering techniques for drawing lines extracted from 3D shapes, focusing on stylization [Northrup and Markosian 2000;Kalnins et al 2002], visibility test , and temporal coherence [Kalnins et al 2003;Bénard et al 2010;Bénard et al 2012]. In this paper, we build on existing stylization methods to provide stereo coherence for stylized lines between two views.…”

“…[7] is very appropriate when zooming in or out by a significant factor, and for parallel nearby lines. It works by precomputing self-similarity and smoothly varying line maps to paramet erize adjacent feature lines.…”

“…Several researchers have addressed the problem of temporal continuity for stylized line drawing animations [5][6][7][8][9]. They pay particular attention to tracing the lines in order to obtain coherent parameterization for stylization.…”

“…Bénard et al [2010] address this issue by generating a multi-scale texture. The proposed parameterization focuses on the same real-time scenario as Kalnins et al [2003] and shares the same limitations inherent in this setup.…”
